How to add users and computers to your SBS 2008 server

In this article we discuss how to add users and computers. You will see that these procedures have been simplified a lot compared to SBS 2003. You will also see that it has become really easy to change users and what they get published to the Vista desktop!

From the start menu start the Windows SBS console if it is not already started.

  1. You can choose to start the Add User Wizard from the main window or you can choose 'Users and Groups'  and take it from there. We go to ' Users and Groups'  in this example.

  2. Choose 'Add a new user account'.

  3. Type the first and last name of the new user. You may change the username by using the drop down menu. More options will be shown. Choose the role for this user and click next.

  4. Choose a password. If you can't come up with a password that meets the requirements you can use a password generator like http://www.pctools.com/guides/password/. I use that all the time! If you have added a password click ' add user account'.

  5. The ' add user wizard'  is working.

  6. We will choose to add a new computer account to our network.

  7. And there is our new user listed!

  1. Logon to a Vista Business, Ultimate or Enterprise workstation and start Internet Explorer.

  2. Accept the warning and click Yes.

  3. Click the button 'Start Connect Computer Program'.

  4. Click ' Run'.

  5. Files are transferred!

  6. The wizard needs to know for who we will setup this computer. In this example we choose to setup this computer for myself.

  7. The wizard has checked the computer and the requirements are verified. Click Next.

  8. Type your username and password. Click Next.

  9. Do you see the difference with SBS 2003? In the previous SBS version we had to assign a computer name on the server and choose from a list when running the ' connectcomputer'  wizard. We choose a name now when we actually connect to the new SBS 2008 server. Click Next.

  10. If there were old user accounts on the workstation I could have migrated those but as this is a brand new workstation there were none. Click next.

  11. It is important to understand that files in an old profile on the workstation will no longer be accessible if you choose not to migrate settings for a user.

  12. We choose not to automatically logon after the workstation has been rebooted. You may choose to do that if you wish. Click Next

  13. The Connect wizard is working for you.

  15. On your Vista desktop right click in Sidebar Area and choose Add Gadgets.

  16. Double click the Windows Small Business 2008 gadget or drag it to your desktop.

  17. And there is your gadget that include the most important links.

How to change the Vista desktop gadget

This is really cool. If you add a Windows Vista client it gets a gadget pushed that can be modified to suit the needs of your organization. Here is how we do that.

  1. From the start menu start the Windows SBS console if it not already started and choose ' Users and Groups'  and then ' Manage Desktop LInks Gadget'.

  2. On the left side choose 'Organization Links'.

  3. Now if you just started as the new president of the United States you need all the help you can get so a link on your desktop to the website of your new home comes in really handy. Click add.

  4. And what would you do without a quick link to www.smallbizserver.net. We added that to the Administration links..

  5. If you now logon to your Vista desktop and open the SBS 2008 gadget you will see the links I just added.
