Installing SharePoint Services 3.0 on a Server Running SBS 2003

All though you cannot upgrade Sharepoint Service 2.0 to version 3.0 you can install Sharepoint Services 3.0 side-by-side on your Small Business Server 2003. It is good idea to install Sharepoint Services 3.0 on your SBS 2003 server because it has a lot more to offer.

Download and install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 with SP1

Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 + SP1 Redistributable Package: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=EC2CA85D-B255-4425-9E65-1E88A0BDB72A&displaylang=en

  1. Double click the executable you just download, that will start the .Net Framework 3.0 installer. Accept the terms and click 'Next'.
  2. Looks a bit different compared to what I am used to see when an installer starts but the balloon informs me nicely what is going on.
  3. But if you click on the balloon you will see the good old installer screen.
  4. The installer has finished and we need to run Windows Update to see if any updates are missing.

Download and install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with SP1

Download details: Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with SP1:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=EF93E453-75F1-45DF-8C6F-4565E8549C2A&displaylang=en.
Important:

  • You must download and install SharePoint Services 3.0 with Service Pack 1 integrated.
  • If you have previously installed WSUS 2.0 or WSUS 3.0 make sure you upgrade to WSUS 3.0 with SP1 BEFORE you install Sharepoint 3.0.
  • Also make sure you have installed ALL updates available for your server and run the SBS BPA BEFORE you install Sharepoint 3.0
  1. Accept the terms and click 'Continue'.
  2. You MUST select 'No, do not upgrade at this time..' as in the screenshot below. If you fail to do that you will destroy your SBS installation and many wizards will fail. Be sure that you have working backup! Choose the Tab 'Server Type'.
  3. Choose 'Stand-alone'. Choose the tab 'Data Location'.
  4. Make sure you have enough space. If not choose to move the location of the search index files. Click 'Install Now'.
  5. Setup is running...
  6. Make sure the checkbox 'Run the Sharepoint..' is checked and click 'Close'. If you are prompted to reboot do that.

Configure Windows SharePoint Services Products and Technologies

  1. If you were prompted to reboot and the Sharepoint wizard does not start automatically you need to start it from the Administrative tools.
  2. You are warned that some service need to be restarted. Choose 'Yes'.
  3. Setup is working...
  4. Click 'Finish'.
  5. The default site opens but we don't want that. Close this window.

Create a new intranet site using Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

  1. Open SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration from the Administrative Tools.
  2. On the Application Management tab, in SharePoint Web Application Management, click Create or extend web application.
  3. Click 'Create a new Web application'.
  4. On the Create a New Web Application set:
    1. Create a new IIS web site: give it a name and a unique port
    2. In Application Pool, ensure that Create a new application pool is selected, and then select Predefined for Network Service as the security account for the application pool.
    3. In Database Name and Authentication, ensure that Windows authentication is selected.
    4. In Search Server, select the server in dropdown box that is running Windows SBS as your search server
  5. Make sure you make the correct choices and fill in everything as described above. Click 'OK'
  6. Operation in progress...
  7. On the Application Created page, click Create Site Collection.
  8. On the Create Site Collection page, fill in the following:
    1. In Title and Description, type the title and description.
    2. In Web Site Address, in URL, choose http://ServerName:PortName/sites/SiteName.
    3. In Template selection, click Team site.
    4. In Primary Site Collection Administrator, specify the user name of the person administering this site (for example, Administrator).
    5. Click OK.
  9. On the Top Level Site Successfully Created page, click the link to the new Web site, and add it to your Favorites.

Delete the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 default Web site

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
  2. On the Application Management tab, in SharePoint Web Application Management, click Delete Web Application.
  3. In the dropdown menu choose 'Change web application'.
  4. Click on Sharepoint - 80. That is the default Sharepoint 3.0 site that was created during setup but we don't need that.
  5. Make sure that delete is yes is set for both the IIS web site and the content database. Click 'Delete'.
  6. Click 'OK' to confirm your choices. After this has been completed you are back in the Application Management window of the Sharepoint Central Administration. Close this window.

Start the default Web site and the WSS 2.0 http://companyweb Web site

  1. Open IIS Manager from the Administrative Tools.
  2. As you the default web site is stopped. We need to start that site.
  3. Highlight the Default Web Site and click on 'Start'.
  4. Now we browse to the site we just created to see if all works as expected...
