How to backup your Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server to USB drives

In this tutorial we describe how to backup the server. It all starts with configuring the server to make the backups. For reliable backups you will need at least 3 USB drives that are twice the size of the drives and partitions you are going to include in your backup schedule.

The backup routine from the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard assures you that everything is included in your backup you restore the whole server even after a fire or theft. In most cases it is even possible to restore to different hardware but this requires some extra work in most cases. Anyway, a good backup is the insurance that your business can continue even after disaster hits your company.

I saw the smoldering debris after a fire in a client's business premises. Fortunately, there were backups that were stored offline.

  1. Start the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard, highlight the server and choose ‘Set up Backup for the server’. You also see below that option the Azure Online backup but that is described in another article.
