Migrate from Windows Server 2008 R2 (Foundation) to Windows Server 2016 (Essentials)

Migrate from Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation to Windows Server 2016 Essentials

In our forums, there was a question for more documentation on migrating from Windows Server 2008 R2 Essentials to Windows Server 2016 Essentials. Initially, I had decided to write only about migrations from SBS or later successors to new server operating systems but here it is. This tutorial is also valid for migrations from Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise to Windows Server 2016 Essentials.

Every step in this tutorials has a screenshot and if any Powershell is involved we have made it easy for you to copy it to your own situation. This tutorial will guide you from the start until everything has been migrated to the new server. And at the end of the procedure, we will show you how you can safely remove the old Windows Server 2008 R2 (Foundation) from your Active Directory.

This tutorial will help most companies to migrate from Windows Server 2008 R2 (Foundation) to a new server with a new Operating System but it is not a 'one size fit all' solution. You should read the procedure before you start and if there is anything not clear please use our special forum for subscribers to ask your questions. This forum cannot be crawled by search engines and is private.
